The best method of planting sunflowers and growing sunflower seeds

Depending on exactly how much space in your garden will actually determine the type of sunflower seeds that you should buy. On the sunflower seed bag that you bought will tell you which time you can plant these sunflower seeds as most do well when planted during different seasons of the year. You can follow a Farmer’s Almanac to planting these sunflower seeds. However we have found that the best time to plant sunflower seeds are about six weeks before spring frost begins. If your sunflowers died during autumn you should be prepared to replant. This is why when planting sunflowers you should do so during two and a half 2 ½ week intervals during the growing season so you should be sure to leave space for two plantings in your garden.

We have planted sunflowers and have found using these tips and hints to deliver the best results. First plant the seeds just a bit before the spring frost, and then place an old screen with holes directly over the seeds that you have planted. While the sunflower begins to sprout the screen will keep away the birds from gobbling up the sunflower sprouts. You should ensure that you label these sunflowers using a stone because they can look like other plants in your garden and be easily mistaken. Give the sunflowers lots of vegetable water. That means when you boil and cook vegetables in your kitchen you use the left over water to give to your plants. When we used this method sunflowers grew up to about 12 feet tall. We had to place a light screen over these sunflowers as birds devoured the sunflowers as they were ready to harvest.
